Evaluating Your Current Job and Career

As you consider your current circumstances, think about whether the following are meeting your personal and professional needs:

YOUR COMPANY

  • Is your company one that encourages and supports skill development and professional growth?
  • Does the company offer individual or group incentives to share in the financial successes?
  • Is workplace one that is family-friendly and supportive?

YOUR BOSS

  • Does your boss make the effort to utilize your skills and talents to their fullest potential?
  • Is your boss an advocate of your department or work group to upper management?
  • Does your boss support your success by offering appropriate tools, resources and training?

YOU

It’s time to take care of YOU. After reviewing this list, ask yourself the following "If I were on the job market today, would I chose to work for this company over others?" Depending on the issues, you will need to decide whether the dissatisfactions are significant enough for a job or employment change. If you are generally satisfied with your company, but not your current job or boss, consider seeking a transfer or promotion to accommodate the aspects which are not working for you.

If your overall evaluation is that you would not choose your current employer today, then it’s time for some serious planning to move on. Having gone through the process of identifying what is important to you and what is and is not working will be helpful in finding a career or employment match that suits your needs and goals.
